Chemical Oscillations out of Chemical Noise

چکیده
The dynamics of one species chemical kinetics is studied. Chemical reactions are modelled by means of continuous time Markov processes whose probability distribution obeys a suitable master equation. A large deviation theory is formally introduced, which allows developing a Hamiltonian dynamical system able to describe the system dynamics. Using this technique we are able to show that the intrinsic fluctuations, originated in the discrete character of the reagents, may sustain oscillations and chaotic trajectories which are impossible when these fluctuations are disregarded. An important point is that oscillations and chaos appear in systems whose mean-field dynamics has too low a dimensionality for showing such a behavior. In this sense these phenomena are purely induced by noise, which does not limit itself to shifting a bifurcation threshold. On the other hand, they are large deviations of a short transient nature which typically appear only after long waiting times. We also discuss the implications of our results in understanding extinction events in population dynamics models expressed by means of stoichiometric relations.

Noise induced oscillations and coherence resonance in a generic model of the nonisothermal chemical oscillator
Oscillating chemical reactions are common in biological systems and they also occur in artificial non-biological systems. Generally, these reactions are subject to random fluctuations in environmental conditions which translate into fluctuations in the values of physical variables, for example, temperature. We formulate a mathematical model for a nonisothermal minimal chemical oscillator contai...
متن کاملInternal noise coherent resonance for mesoscopic chemical oscillations: a fundamental study.
The effect of internal noise for a mesoscopic chemical oscillator is studied analytically in a parameter region outside, but close to, the supercritical Hopf bifurcation. By normal form calculation and a stochastic averaging procedure, we obtain stochastic differential equations for the oscillation amplitude r and phase theta that is solvable. Noise-induced oscillation and internal noise cohere...
متن کاملDissipation in noisy chemical networks: The role of deficiency.
We study the effect of intrinsic noise on the thermodynamic balance of complex chemical networks subtending cellular metabolism and gene regulation. A topological network property called deficiency, known to determine the possibility of complex behavior such as multistability and oscillations, is shown to also characterize the entropic balance. In particular, when deficiency is zero the average...
متن کاملSpatiotemporal Chaos in Coupled Oscillator Systems with Global Feedback or External Noise
In this thesis, we mainly study two topics: the first one is chemical turbulence in oscillatory reaction-diffusion systems with global feedback, and the second one is noise-induced turbulence in nonlocally coupled oscillator systems. First topic: A new type of phase transition in chemical turbulence, which is characterized by the emergence of small-amplitude collective oscillations out of the s...
متن کاملAmplification of noise in a cascade chemical reaction.
Networks of chemical reactions have been given much attention recently. However, dynamical aspects of such networks remain to be elucidated. In this paper, we study a cascade chemical reaction, consisting of a series of downstream-coupled Brusselators. Along the cascade of reaction, small fluctuations naturally existing in the concentration of chemical species are amplified. Such amplification ...
